Our true history begins with the formation of the America Hose Company No. 4 back in 1858, established at 33 Main Street in Mount Holly (now a part of Downtown Pizza on High St.) The fourth fire company within the township, America Hose would eventually become the rescue arm of the Mount Holly Fire, Station 504.
In June 1937, a youth who'd drowned in the Mill Dam section of the Rancocas Creek was pulled from the waters, with the then active Mount Holly Beach Patrol attempting to revive them. The Industrial Rescue Squad of PSE&G Company of Burlington was requested, who brought a H-H Inhalator, a type of artificial ventilation device that delivered 5% CO2 and 95% O2. Ultimately, the youth would not survive. Members of the America Hose company met and knew that one day it could be one of their own children who would receive help too late.
The America Emergency Squad would be established soon after, with Mount Holly Township purchasing an H-H Inhalator for the Squad a few months later for $300. The newly formed board of directors decided against "America Rescue Squad" as a name as they wanted to convey that the new Squad would be there for any and all types of emergencies. By 1940, they had purchased an old hearse, a 1937 Packard, and converted it to be used as our first rig in service. Squad members quickly joined and, were trained by, the Burlington County First Aid Council.
A new building was constructed in 1955 to house both the America Hose Co. No. 4 and the America Emergency Squad. By the early 90's, Station 509 would be the first paid Squad in Burlington County, resulting in the Squad separating from under the township and becoming a fully private 501(3)c non-profit organization. Eventually, America Hose and Station 504 would cease to exist, leaving only the Squad occupying the building.
A long way from an old hearse and volunteers, America Emergency Squad now maintains three Type III box ambulances, two support vehicles, and 25+ paid emergency medical technicians, handling over 3,000 calls for service a year. The Squad has been the primary pre-hospital emergency provider for Mount Holly Township since its inception. Historical documentation shows the Squad has responded to Springfield Township since at least the '80's, now being one of two Squads (with Endeavor) contracted for primary response there.
